7-Day Indian Thyroid Diet Chart: Hypothyroidism Meal Plan (Veg & Non-Veg)

By Apeksha & Anita, Co-founders

A thyroid diet chart is not a restriction list. It is a rotation that gets selenium, zinc, iron and protein into every day, keeps blood sugar steady, and respects your medication timing. Below is a 7-day Indian plan with a vegetarian option for every non-vegetarian meal.

Before the chart: three non-negotiables

  1. Medication first. Levothyroxine goes on an empty stomach, 30–60 minutes before food. Keep calcium, iron and soy at least four hours away.
  2. Iodised salt, stored properly. Iodine escapes with heat and light. Keep the packet closed and away from the stove.
  3. Protein at every meal. It steadies blood sugar and protects muscle, which matters when your metabolism is already slowed.

Every non-vegetarian item has a vegetarian alternative listed after the slash. Portion sizes depend on your body, activity and medical guidance — this is a template for what, not how much.

What the week is actually delivering

  • Selenium — two Brazil nuts twice a week covers the recommended intake comfortably. Selenium is a cofactor for the deiodinase enzymes that convert T4 into active T3.
  • Zinc — pumpkin seeds, cashews, dals and chana. Zinc supports the same conversion step and is involved in hair and skin repair.
  • Iron — rajma, palak, methi, egg. Iron deficiency is common in Indian women with thyroid conditions and worsens fatigue independently of TSH.
  • Protein and fibre at every meal — steadies blood sugar and reduces the insulin swings that make thyroid-related weight gain harder to shift.

What you will notice is missing

There is no list of banned vegetables. Cauliflower, cabbage and millets all appear in this chart on purpose — cooked, in normal portions, they are not a problem for someone with adequate iodine. If that surprises you, read the goitrogen guide, which walks through the evidence food by food.

There is also no refined sugar, no daily processed snacking, and no long fasting windows. Those are the changes that reliably help — not eliminating gobhi.

The Easiest Day of This Chart

The snack row is where most plans fall apart. Our 30-Day Thyroid Ritual Pack handles it — selenium, zinc and adaptogens in a jar and a bar, with no refined sugar and nothing to prepare.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good Indian diet chart for a thyroid patient?

A thyroid-friendly Indian diet keeps protein at every meal, includes iodised salt, and supplies selenium, zinc and iron regularly — Brazil nuts, pumpkin seeds, dals, eggs or fish, curd, and plenty of cooked vegetables. Levothyroxine is taken on an empty stomach with a gap of 30 to 60 minutes before food and at least four hours before calcium or iron.

How long before breakfast should I take my thyroid tablet?

Take levothyroxine on an empty stomach and wait 30 to 60 minutes before eating or drinking anything other than water. Coffee, milk, calcium and iron all reduce absorption, so give them a wide gap. Consistency matters more than the exact number — take it the same way every day.

Can a vegetarian follow a thyroid diet in India?

Yes. Selenium can come from Brazil nuts and sunflower seeds, zinc from pumpkin seeds, cashews and dals, iron from rajma, green leafy vegetables and jaggery paired with vitamin C, and protein from paneer, curd, dals and soya. The one nutrient worth discussing with your doctor is vitamin B12, which is hard to get without animal foods.

Will this diet chart cure hypothyroidism?

No. Diet supports thyroid function and can improve energy, digestion and weight, but it does not replace thyroid medication. Hypothyroidism is managed with prescribed treatment and regular TSH monitoring. Use this plan alongside your doctor, not instead of them.
